Flying a Helicopter

Flying a Helicopter

Rc Helicopter

Having spent over 20 years as a commercial helicopter pilot the author has the following observations to make:

The first time I ever flew a helicopter I thought to God I was trying to stir a cake.

The second time I flew a helicopter I was convinced I was stirring a cake. The helicopter seemed to have a mind of its own because no matter what you did on the controls it took a helicopter about a second and a quarter to make up its mind that your command on the controls is what you really wanted. This is called a time the lag common to all helicopters. You don't know how long a second and quarter is until you've flown a helicopter.

We were at about 1000 feet and my instructor turned to me and said, "Here you take the controls I'm sick of flying." I quickly grabbed the controls as the nose of the helicopter was heading toward the ground, so I pulled back on the cyclic stick; nothing happened, so then I pulled even further back on the stick. All of a sudden the helicopter having a mind of its own decided I really wanted the nose to go up, so the nose went up until the helicopter was almost pointing straight up into the heavens. At this point I pushed forward on the cyclic stick. This is the stick used to steer a helicopter. The nose kept going up into the wild blue yonder, I panicked as the nose kept going up, and shoved the cyclic stick even further away from me to make the nose go down. All of a sudden down went the nose straight toward the ground, with that I pulled back on the stick. The nose kept going toward the ground. I pulled back on the stick, and the nose continued going toward the ground, so I pulled the stick even further. All of a sudden the nose started rising again toward the heavens.

Meanwhile my fellow passenger who was supposed to be my instructor was sitting over in his seat laughing his head off. He wouldn't tell me what was wrong all he did was to keep laughing, and laughing. His laughter made me mad, so I decided that I'd have to dope the thing out all by myself. The instructor was just sitting in his seat convulsed with laughter. For the next 60 miles by working with the rudder pedals I was able to keep the course of the helicopter reasonably straight, but I continued flying like a porpoise, up-and-down while reciting a whole litany of the traits both common to the helicopter and my instructor as well as some comments about their habits and ancestry. Meanwhile the instructor was sitting in his seat with howling laughter.

After flying all over the sky for about an hour I finally managed to get the helicopter to fly on the straight and level. I probably learned more about flying a helicopter in that one hour then I learned in all the rest of my training flights.

As we approached our destination the instructor took over the controls again and landed the helicopter. Then he finally told me why he would not take the controls back form me; because he wanted me to gain my own confidence of the helicopter. He felt that had he taken the controls back I would never fly a helicopter again. He was right!

Flying a helicopter is a much different proposition than flying an airplane. With an airplane you can set up the trim tabs and the airplane will pretty much fly itself. A helicopter on the other hand will fly the pilot. It is much more difficult to fly a helicopter than an airplane because it takes an entirely different set of skills. The only way you can learn these skills is by experience.

The helicopter has more controls than an airplane. The collective stick you hold in your left hand, and use it to make a helicopter to go up and down by pulling up or pushing down on the stick. This actually changes the pitch of the main rotor blades by changing the amount of bight they have on the air. The same stick also controls the throttle that is like a motorcycle throttle that you operate by twisting. The starter button is often on the very tip of the stick and engages the starter when you push it down. The cyclic stick controls the attitude of the helicopter; or more specifically the attitude of the main rotor. The final control that you use is the rudders. They control the direction in which the helicopter flies. These controls are on the floor towards the front of the cabin, and they are operated by your feet. They actually operate the pitch of the propeller that is at the rear of the helicopter; this is actually called the tail rotor.

Now we have explained what happened when I first started flying a helicopter, and the controls that you have to use to fly a one.

Fun With RC Helicopters

Fun With RC Helicopters

Rc Helicopter

It is true that RC airplanes are commonly seen being flown in open parks and fields outdoors or in the local community in front and back yards, but a close cousin to RC airplanes is identified in the fantastically affordable and fun RC helicopters currently being sold. RC toys in general are amazingly entertaining, but an RC helicopter in particular seemingly adds a new dimension to the RC toy using experience! There is just nothing like mastering an RC helicopter and successfully flying it for hours on end.

In order to truly benefit from utilizing an RC helicopter, the user must really be ready to develop a bit of patience. It is not reasonable to believe that a RC helicopter will be operated with great success the first time it is ever used by a novice. It takes several sessions before the RC helicopter operator learns how to manage the remote control and to direct the RC helicopter in the appropriate way. Thus, the novice flier will want to prepare ahead of time, and be ready to take the RC helicopter out on flights as much as possible; the more the RC helicopter is used the better the controller of the RC toy becomes.

To start out with, there can be some minimal expected investment for the RC helicopter hobbyist. The entire price of the RC helicopter kit selected will be the primary investment, but the RC toy user will also want to keep a fund stored away in case repairs become necessary. There is a good chance that repairs will be likely during the first few uses of the RC helicopter, since the novice is still mastering the art of using the toy. Thus, being financially prepared relieves the hobbyist of the anxiety associated with not having enough monies to fix any damages incurred during first time flying sessions.

When it comes to any and all RC toys, it has to be said that the RC helicopter is the most difficult to learn how to master. If this notion is not a deterrent, then the individual interested in RC helicopter will probably do well with operating one. A stick-to-it attitude and persistent approach gives the hopeful RC helicopter operator an edge of those individuals that have little patience.

At the time that a consumer begins choosing from all of the RC toys and kits available, it should be realized that many of the kits come with assembly required. Instructions are offered with RC helicopters, but they must be implemented correctly or the RC toy will not work at all when it comes time for the flying session. This is so true when it comes to RC helicopters; even a loosely fitting part, or an improperly placed piece can cause the helicopter to lose its aerodynamic properties; when that happens, the RC helicopter will not lift off properly and the wind will not be able to aid in the support of the helicopter. For this reason, once the entire kit is put together, the RC helicopter owner might very well want to take a trip to the local hobby shop to have experts give the item a once over; this checking system will ensure that everything is put together appropriately.

Finally, during RC helicopter flying sessions, one must take certain precautions to, not only protect the RC helicopter, but to protect one's self and others too. The RC helicopter blades can prove to be quite damaging when coming into contact with other objects and can even cut an individual; this is why this item should never be used in enclosed spaces or too near other people. Instead, RC helicopters and many RC toys are far better when enjoyed outdoors in open areas where there is plenty of space to enjoy free range of motion with the RC toys in use.

Electric RC Plane - Diversify Your Landing Options

Electric RC Plane - Diversify Your Landing Options

Rc Helicopter

If you are ready to take flight with an electric RC plane, but you don't have a large field nearby to fly one, then the 4-channel Float and Land Plane might be the answer for you!

The 4-Channel Float and Land Plane has the ability to take-off and land on both land and sea. This "specially designed" plane comes with landing gear for land, or wheels, and also comes with "floats" for landing on water. So whether you have a field to fly it in, or if you are going to the lake, you can take RC fun with you. All you have to do is remove and replace the landing gear for the terrain you are planning to use it on.

This plane has excellent control and stability, making it easier to learn with than more complex, more expensive planes. It is steady in flight and very easy to master. It also is a great plane for flying at slow speed. Flying at slow speed makes it easier to fly in restricted-space and low altitude situations, so if you are flying in a small field or above a small lake, you have better control. Overall, it is an outstanding Float plane and Land plane for all different ranges of flyer's, skilled or not.

The 4-Channel Float and Land Plane comes ready to fly (RTF). It operates with an electric motor, powered by an 11.1v 1200mah Nimh battery. The maximum operating range is approximately 800 feet and has a 4-channel remote system. The dimensions of the plane are (approximately) 16 inches long, 19 inches wide, and 10 inches high. The package includes the manual, the remote (8 AA batteries NOT included), the battery pack, and the 110v home charger. It weighs in at about 23 pounds.

Like any RC plane or helicopter, i personally would not recommend this for children under the age of 12 for the simple fact that you are flying and any loss of control can be detrimental to your plane. But, regardless of age, there is a learning curve for all "first time" flyer's. If you don't want to risk the investment, there are plenty of electric RC planes from the price range of and up. Select a little less expensive one and start you flight training in comfort of the lower cost.

The other option I would recommend, that helps with the learning curve, is to start out with an electric RC helicopter. RC helicopters are easier to get used to because they can hover making it easier to gain control, take-off, and land. But, regardless of the choice of vehicles you make, moving into the world of RC flight is an exhilarating way to take your RC fetish to the next level!

R/C airplane Test Stand? I haven't flown Ukie for 50 years until recently. I have never watched any Ukie videos on YouTube, but I expect someone probably has already done what I did today long ago. If so, I never saw it. But for me to try it (using my own ideas), was the challenge. Here are the results of my first attempt at RC Control Line as I continue to mix History with Present Technology. I would have no problem having someone learn the elevator sensitivity and throttle, with this setup. It is kinda like my RC Helicopter test and training stand, in some of my previous videos. IRCHA Jamboree- Radio Control Helicopter Competition

IRCHA Jamboree- Radio Control Helicopter Competition On YouTube.

IRCHA Jamboree- Radio Control Helicopter Competition The International Radio Controlled Helicopter Association (IRCHA) was founded in 1989 by helicopter pilot Don Chapman. IRCHA is a Special Interest Group (SIG) that represents the interests of helicopter pilots within the AMA. IRCHA hosted its first Jamboree in Dayton, Ohio in 1992. The following year the event was held in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. From 1994 through the year 2000, the Jamboree found a home in Hebron, Ohio which is located outside of the city of Columbus. Following the sale of the property in Hebron, Ron Kummer approached the AMA about using the flying site in Muncie for the Jamboree. The Jamboree immediately followed the helicopter world championships in 2001 and despite the tragedy that occurred that September when the airlines shut down, the Jamboree attracted around 200 pilots. The IRCHA Jamboree has been held at AMA headquarters ever since. This year, aside from the 3D flying (and there was plenty of that!), a pit area and flight station were set aside for scale and vintage helicopter flying. Much to my surprise, this was just to the right of show center. In Peter Wales book on scale helicopter flying he mentions that people get bored with 3D helicopter antics, but if you break out a scale helicopter people will stop what they are doing and watch. This was clearly in evidence as any time one of the larger scale helicopters took to the air the video cameras were rolling and the still cameras (mine ...

How to Fly RC Helicopters

How to Fly RC Helicopters

Rc Helicopter

Flying remote control helicopters is a great way relieve stress and be entertained by where you can fly the helicopter; however they do require some patience, good eye and hand coordination and practice. After taking the helicopter from the box, the first step is to read the instruction manual and make sure that it is intact. When purchasing a RC helicopter, it is best to find one that has at least four channels with adequate backup or technical support to call on if you need to do so. Some of the best remote control helicopters are manufactured by companies in Britain.

Learning how to fly RC helicopters is not extremely hard but there are a few basic facts to keep in mind. The remote control helicopters are controlled by radio waves; with the lift powered by the way the helicopter blades turn against the air and the direction is controlled by the pitch or direction of the tail rotor. One good idea is to have an experienced flyer help when you are starting to fly RC helicopters because he or she can give you tips on the best way to master the tiny tricks that make you a better flyer and able to handle flying the radio controlled helicopter in a faster amount of time.

The importance of making sure the connections on your RC helicopter all are correctly wired and tightened cannot be stressed too much, without the proper tension, the helicopter won't fly correctly and or can crash, bringing a halt to your hobby for a while. It is best to search for repair instructions and spare parts if they are not included with your kit. It is best to follow a checklist whenever you are learning how to fly your radio controlled helicopter; this is where doing everything the same for set up and starting will keep you and your helicopter safe.

To control the RC helicopter, you need to be able to operate the collective and rudder at the same time; both of them act together to make your helicopter move up, down, sideways, forwards and backwards. If you have a person helping you, you can use the buddy system which enables the instructor to explain and show how to fly the RC helicopter. To make the radio controlled helicopter, the controller on the left is the throttle, it controls how high or fast the helicopter is going, the right controller is used to control direction.

It is better to practice doing small maneuvers at first, before venturing into more challenging areas. Many people who are in the process of learning how to fly radio controlled helicopters invest in a simulator to help them learn how to maneuver, a crash on the simulator is much cheaper then crashing your RC helicopter outdoors, then having to pay for expensive parts to repair the helicopter. Flying remote controlled helicopters is a great way to spend time outdoors and making the helicopter hover and dive or do acrobatics. Keep practicing and find other people who enjoy flying RC helicopters as well as watching video or DVD's to improve your skills and your will have a lifelong hobby to entertain and amuse yourself and those around who will want to learn how to fly RC helicopters.

Align Trex RC Helicopters: Trex 100S Shopping Guide For You

Align Trex RC Helicopters: Trex 100S Shopping Guide For You

Rc Helicopter

Align Trex RC Helicopters are considered the high end in the RC helicopter hobby. Prices on these guys can go anywhere from for a bare bones helicopter and can go upwards of ,700 and more for the more complex combo kits. But then again Align is considered the top RC helicopter manufacturer. The bigger Trex Align Helis are not meant for the beginner. You don't want to take one of the babies out without any experience and crash it. Make no mistake because these helicopters are the Mac Daddy of RC Helicopters.

In this article we are going to cover the Align Trex 100S, this is the companies first micro sized helicopter. Weighing in at 32g this little on can fit in the palm of your hands. The 100S is intended for the beginner in RC aviation and designed to survive crashes. But it looks as though Align has incorporated all the quality of their big helicopters in this small package. Align Trex RC Helicopters are well known for not coming completely assembled and the 100S is not an exception. Although not as complex as the larger Trex Align Helis, basically all the assembly entails is popping the head onto the main shaft, two ball links, tighten up the "Jesus Bolt" and pop on the canopy and your ready to fly! It has been called the fastest box to flight of any Align Trex yet! Like other micro RC helicopters of its class this one is no different, the 100S is really not intended for outdoor use unless there is virtually no wind and is more intended for indoor use.

The super combo kit for the Align Trex 100S consists of a 2.4 GHz transmitter that also doubles as a flight battery charger and simulator, two lithium polymer batteries, a dual lithium polymer battery charger, a flight simulator cable and software, USB cable for charging (NEW) and 4 AA rechargeable batteries. The standard combo pack includes all of the above except for the lithium polymer charger and rechargeable AA batteries. The super combo kit for these Align Trex RC Helicopters is around 5, standard combo goes for around 0

As mentioned above and this is REALLY a huge selling point for beginners, this Align Trex comes with flight simulator software! you can learn to fly your new 100s before even actually taking to the air with it! This is essential as the prices of these mini's as compared to others is quite expensive so it would prudent for a beginner to learn how to fly and maneuver these Align Trex RC Helicopters virtually before actually flying one in real life. Being that the 100S is a fixed pitch rotor it should not be too much of a lesson to fly one as fixed pitched RC helicopters are known to be within the beginner's realm and easy to control.

RC Flight Simulators

RC Flight Simulators

Rc Helicopter

If there is an area where RC has advanced dramatically, it is in simulators. RC flight simulators used to be cheesy, but now are outstanding.

A Remote Control flight simulator is a computer software program in a video game format that allows you to replicate the feeling of flying an actual RC model airplane on your PC. The idea of flight simulation computer games was developed with some of the earliest gaming computers. The early flight simulators were not useful for RC training because the programs and graphics were still rather primitive.

The recent increased capacity for gaming and graphic reproductions as well as the more wide spread availability of Personal computers has led to a surge in the production and sales of flight simulator programs designed to simulate remote controlled flight. The best programs use a transmitter that is the same as the one used in actual flight situations. The transmitter is connected to the computer via a USB cable. Signals from the transmitter operate the simulated plane in the gaming display on the monitor exactly as a RC model would respond in actual flight.

The training possibilities are what make the flight simulator much more than just another computer game. The ability to simulate the exact conditions and feel of a real RC model plane allows a person to perfect his flying skills on the simulator without risk to his expensive actual RC model. The simple basic landing and takeoffs can be practiced until they can be done perfectly. The more advanced maneuvers can be practiced again and again until perfection is achieved. Then you are ready to try them out with a real plane.

Some of the better simulator programs include the Great Planes Realflight G3.5. It is considered by many to be the best software available. The G3.5 has several expansion modules that can be used with the basic program. This gives a person a wide choice of airplane types and graphic backgrounds. The Aerofly Pro Deluxe RC Flight simulator is another highly rated choice. It is possible to adapt your own transmitter for use with the software which gives an exact reproduction of the feel of the controls.

A third highly rated software program is the Reflex XTR. One of the features of these high quality flight simulators is the ability to reproduce not only various flying environments, but also weather and visibility conditions. Some can reproduce night flying or simulate out of sight control of the aircraft when it flies behind an object and out of line of sight. Most Hobby Shops that sell RC vehicles will carry the RC flight simulators or have information on how to obtain them. As the motto of one highly rated flight simulator promises, first they will teach you how to fly an RC model plane and then they will make you an expert.

Blade 400 Helicopter-Part II, Test Ride

Blade 400 Helicopter-Part II, Test Ride On YouTube.

This is the Pitch Curve and Trimming flights of the Blade 400. This is my Electronic and Mechanical "break in" period. It allows me to test and trim my equipment before really getting aggressive. It also allows me to find out the characteristics of this heli's flight. It is all part of the learning curve when flying a new helicopter. So now that I have it trimmed, I will present a more aggressive flight when my fingers don't get so cold next time. Stay tuned and thanks for watching.

Electric RC Plane Terminology for the Beginner

Electric RC Plane Terminology for the Beginner

Rc Helicopter

Most of us are familiar with the two letter combination of R and C and what it means. When used together, they stand for the phrase "radio control." A growing number of aspiring and wannabe aviators are choosing to spend a large portion of their leisure time at the controls of an electric RC plane.

The pleasures enjoyed by those who fly model planes increases, if and when the hobbyist takes the time to learn a few principle terms. Those who have just begun to pursue RC flying normally operate a control with three different channels. The smart hobbyist learns the technical name for the thing that is controlled by each channel.

Every electric RC airplane will have a motor and a rudder. Two of the three channels in the controlling device will allow for remote operation of the motor and rudder. The third channel controls the elevator which determines the degree to which the aircraft will rise above the ground.

While hardly a new hobby, the growing numbers of enthusiasts who fly an electric RC plane--fueled by design improvements that make flying easier to learn and less expensive--do serve to illustrate the general public's fascination with flight. In turn, the increase in RC adherents continues to spur important innovations, such as brushless motors, electronic speed controls (ESC), nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) and lithium polymer (LiPo) batteries and spread spectrum radio systems.

Thanks to the introduction of 2.4 GHz spread spectrum technology, those who fly RC can now enjoy interference-free flying. If you are just starting out, consider purchasing a 2.4 GHz radio system as opposed to a traditional narrow-band set. That way you'll never have to worry about another pilot getting on your frequency and causing you to stall out or crash.
